What Does "Transfer From Failed" Mean on a DEX Swap?
The "transfer from failed" error on a dex-swap-mechanics/dex-swap-price-impact-too-high-warning/">DEX swap means the smart contract could not pull the tokens you were trying to swap from your wallet. It is a permission or balance issue, not a pricing or liquidity problem. The transaction fails before it even reaches the swap logic.
Why this error happens
A DEX swap works in two steps: first the contract takes your input tokens, then it gives you output tokens. "Transfer from failed" means the first step failed. The contract attempted to call the transferFrom function on the token contract for your input tokens, and that call returned false.
The three most common causes are:
-
Insufficient token allowance - You have not approved the DEX contract to spend enough of your tokens. Even if you approved earlier, some tokens require re-approval after a change in the allowance amount.
-
Insufficient token balance - You do not hold enough of the input token in your wallet to cover the swap amount plus any fees the token charges on transfers.
-
Token-specific transfer restrictions - Some tokens have built-in transfer limits, blacklists, or pause mechanisms that block the transfer entirely.
How to Diagnose the Specific Cause
Step 1: Check your token balance
Open your wallet and confirm you have more than the swap amount of the input token. Remember that some tokens charge a fee on every transfer (reflection tokens, tax tokens). If the swap amount is 100 tokens but the token takes a 5% fee, your wallet needs at least 105 tokens to complete the transfer.
Step 2: Check your token allowance
On the swap page, look for an "Approve" button. If you see it, click it and confirm the approval transaction in your wallet. If you have already approved but the error persists, the approval may be for a lower amount than you are trying to swap. You can check your current allowance on the token contract on a block explorer:
- Find the token contract address (from the token's official site or CoinGecko, not from a random link).
- Open the token contract page on Etherscan or your chain's explorer.
- Use the "Contract" tab, then "Read Contract" or "Token Tracker" to find the
allowancefunction. - Enter your wallet address and the DEX router contract address (MilkshakeSwap's router address is on their docs page).
- Compare the returned allowance to your swap amount.
If the allowance is lower than the swap amount, you need to increase it. Some tokens require setting allowance to zero first before setting a new higher allowance.
Step 3: Check for token transfer restrictions
Some tokens have:
- Max transfer amount per transaction. Check the token's documentation or read the contract's
maxTxAmountor_maxTxAmountvariable. - Blacklist - Your wallet may be blacklisted from transferring the token. This is rare but happens with some scam tokens or tokens that implement regulatory compliance.
- Paused transfers - The token contract may have a
pausedstate. Check the contract'spaused()function on the block explorer.
What "transfer from failed" is not
This error is not about:
- Slippage tolerance being too low
- Price impact being too high
- The liquidity pool having insufficient reserves
- MEV or sandwich attacks (those happen after the transfer succeeds)
- Network congestion or gas fees being too low
If you see "transfer from failed," the issue is entirely about your wallet's ability to give tokens to the DEX. The swap never got far enough to care about prices or pools.
How to fix it
-
Approve the token - If you have not approved, do that first. If you have, try resetting the allowance to zero and then re-approving the full swap amount.
-
Reduce the swap amount - Try swapping a smaller amount, especially if the token has transfer fees or limits.
-
Use a different input token - If the token has unusual restrictions, consider swapping to a stablecoin or ETH first, then swapping that to your desired output token.
-
Check if the token is a known "honeypot" - A honeypot token lets you buy but not sell. If you cannot transfer the token at all, even to another wallet, it may be a honeypot. Test by sending a tiny amount to a different wallet you control. If that also fails, the token is likely a scam.
If none of these steps work, the token itself may be broken or intentionally designed to prevent transfers. In that case, you cannot swap it on any DEX, and the tokens are effectively stuck.
